Elon Musk says Tesla is working on a car 'half the cost' of a Model 3.
As with anything Tesla, it's unclear how to take this promise. While the company has a long history of game-changing products and serious innovation, its list of promises is much longer still. With this announcement, the company now has more unreleased products publicly disclosed than it has products on sale; the Cybertruck, Semi, Roadster, and now this baby Tesla.
The first three have all missed their theoretical launch datesPricing, too, has been a place where Tesla has struggled to meet the expectations it sets for itself. The Model 3 was first pitched as aand, when it proved basically impossible to manufacture profitably at that price, Tesla axed the base model after very few deliveries. A current Model 3 starts at $46,990, although of course, all cars have gotten more expensive since the cheapest Tesla was announced.
