As 60th birthday presents go Steve Clarke has been good to himself. And the entire country, for that matter.
That’s an extremely unlikely scenario, given the potential of the powerfully built attacking midfielder, who has forced his way into Eddie Howe’s first team picture at Newcastle and is regarded as one of the best young players in England. “You get to a certain age when he has a choice between Scotland and England. You have to weigh up what you want to do. He took his time to weigh it up and he has come down on our side. I’m pretty pleased about it.
“If he can get minutes on the pitch then great. If it’s not and it is still a successful camp then he learns from being within the camp, so that’s also good. “Ben, if he continues to do what he’s doing, will be involved in the future. I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Ben will go with the Under 21s and get 90 minutes with them, which is good because he’s not getting a lot of 90 minutes. He’s certainly one for the future and if he keeps doing what he’s doing he’s going to make my job even more difficult, which is fantastic.
