’s alternately thrilling and exhausting film is the kind of tear-down-the-scenery stuff that risks hamminess. But Moss find just the right portion of restraint. She’s playing an imagined version of the author Shirley Jackson, a troubled mind swirling around a well-appointed old home in early 1950s Vermont. Her cloistered life is usually only interrupted by her husband, the literary critic and Bennington professor Stanley Hyman . But at the start of, a young couple moves into the manor: the husband, Fred , is a fledgling professor seeking Stanley’s approval, while the wife, Rose , is left to her own lonely, unsatisfying devices.
By the end of Decker’s rigorous film, it’s become a spiky, poignant look at women helping one another locate their autonomy—to honor their need—in a world of manipulative, heedless men. There is a kind of triumph to be found, though of course we know that the details of Jackson’s own life got progressively grimmer until her death.at least lets Jackson bequeath Rose with a new awareness, a potent exchange illustrated beautifully by Moss and Young.
