When it comes to the causes of the inflation that continues to plague California households, perhaps Walt Kelly’s old comic strip swamp possum Pogo said it best: “We have met the enemy, and he is us.”Elias: Garvey’s run so far impressive but makes Schiff a likely shoo-in
Yes, the Federal Reserve tells us inflation is not as severe as a year or so ago, when gasoline prices rose by $2 per gallon over two days in February 2023. The price in California, though, still hovers well above $4, in part because the state has yet to enforce its eight-month-old law letting it charge penalties to price-gouging oil companies.
That’s another inflation element. We also elected the legislators who raised the minimum wage to $16 an hour effective Jan. 1, with minimum hourly pay for fast food workers rising to $20 on April 1 and $21 for health care workers on June 1. We elected the governor who signed off on those, and by a large margin we rejected an effort to recall him.
We also voted twice against propositions for statewide rent controls. One result is that rents are staying high despite the myriad vacancies among newly-built market-rate apartments. Meanwhile, many places have waiting lists for formally designated affordable units.
