Nightmare on Chicago Street could come back if the Elgin City Council opts to reverse its decision to cancel the popular downtown Halloween event this year.
The Elgin City Council is discuss the issue at its Wednesday night Committee of the Whole meeting, which includes an agenda item in which “Special Events Coordinator Kate O’Leary and city staff will be reiterating their commitment to producing Nightmare on Chicago Street if the city council and community sentiment is to proceed despite economic and other factors that may negatively impact the event’s success this year.
The request, approved in a 4-3 council vote, did not preclude the event from being held in future years. It’s been estimated the one-night festival, which replicates a zombie apocalypse, could cost $500,000 — 51% more than the last time it was held in 2019. The increased cost of rental equipment and entertainment and a shortage of volunteers would mean more city employees would be needed to plan and execute the gathering.“I wish the city council would reconsider.
“This is so disappointing,” another said. “I was already planning my costume and we booked our vacation around any dates this event would normally be held.” Nightmare committee member Alice Moring, who spoke in favor of continuing with the event at the council’s April 13 meeting, said she was happy the topic was being revisited.
“I’m glad it’s coming back to the council for a harder look and a more in-depth conversation,” Moring said. “Of course, there will be people at the meeting. They were pretty shocked that the event was voted on and voted down at the last meeting.”
