Turning the tide for this Central American nation will require an effort from Guatemalan society and the international community. For a failing democracy, this is an opportunity for a jump-start.

Both Guatemala and Ecuador face economic challenges and rising violence that have triggered thousands to immigrate to our southern border. More than 140,000 Guatemalans and about 85,000 Ecuadorians have been encountered by Border Patrol this fiscal year so far., there is also reason for cautious optimism.

The 35-year-old Noboa is hardly an outsider. He is the son of a banana tycoon who previously ran five times for the presidency.
