The question of whether a woman could be elected to political office has been asked repeatedly for the last several years and the 2020 presidential election is no different. One of the issues female candidates have faced is the question of likability, another subjective term.
“So can a woman beat Donald Trump? Look at the men on this stage, collectively they have lost 10 elections. The only people on this stage who have won every single election that they’ve been in are the women,” Elizabeth Warren said at the Democratic debate on Tuesday. “And the only person on this stage who has beaten an incumbent Republican in the past 30 years is me.”
It was asked again at the debate in Iowa because the day before Warren said that at a private meeting in 2018, Bernie Sanders told her that he did not think that a woman could win the presidency. “Among the topics that came up was what would happen if Democrats nominated a female candidate. I thought a woman could win; he disagreed,” shein a statement Monday.
Until now, Warren has largely avoided discussing the challenges that face a female presidential candidate. This strategy might be because of the criticism Hillary Clinton got for focusing on women’s issues and as the first female nominee of a major political party.
