Texas is undeniably red — but that was no reason for voters to give Ken Paxton a third...

No such postmortem is needed in Texas, where Republicans crushed their Democratic opponents in statewide races. Unlike any politician in his generation or recent generations, Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke had an electric ability to inspire people and draw huge and enthusiastic crowds. But that wasn’t enough to keep him from losing by 11 points to Gov. Greg Abbott, who was elected to his third term.
As much as we disagree with many of the policies of Abbott and especially Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, their comfortable re-elections show they reflect the values and character of most voters who went to the ballot. As he waits for a trial, Paxton has been accused by former staffers of corruption, for which he’s under FBI investigation. He is being sued by the State Bar of Texas for professional misconduct for filing a laughable lawsuit in the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the 2020 presidential election results in four states. In September he fled his home to keep from being served subpoena papers.
