Violent imagery and language in advertisements, social media and rallies has gone too far. It has created a fertile ground for violence and coarsened our ability to respond with basic compassion. When refusing to call things for what they are becomes politically advantageous, when sowing confusion and doubt over the most basic facts earns you plaudits, that’s a sign of a political climate at risk of disaster.
Back in 1954, Welch’s question to the senator of the United States was enough to, seemingly overnight, vaporize his immense national popularity. Ostracized by his party, censured by his Senate colleagues and ignored by the press, McCarthy lost everything.
What we need is more leaders like Welch and Chase Smith who can be brave enough to model decency themselves. And we need voters who can hold politicians accountable to that most basic of attributes.
