Oh my gosh! That was a fun phone call to make to a lot of my family members. We come from a long line of fans of hers., and the cast is comedically stacked, from Brad Garrett to Charlie Day to Kenan Thompson. Were you improvising a lot while filming or was the bulk of the role on paper already?Well, I didn’t realize we were going to be improvising as much as we ended up improvising.
. But is playing the real-life mother of the person you’re acting opposite even more nerve-wracking than usual?It’s a conversation that I had with Pete early on, that I wasn’t going to try to imitate his real mom. It was clear that he was open to me doing whatever I felt like, which gave me all kinds of freedom. I didn’t want to try to imitate his mom; that didn’t seem necessary or interesting.
