Ederson is at the front of a change to goalkeeping in the game that looks permanent, but has improved more traditional aspects
Anyone who thought Pep Guardiola would like anything to do with Johan Cruyff got a rude awakening on Tuesday night at the Etihad.
Ederson's style has become increasingly mainstream - United's decision to drop David de Gea and spend big money on Andre Onana is the latest example in the Premier League - but when he is not Cruyff-turning his way into trouble his distribution remains the template. Having a 'keeper who is good with the ball at his feet may not be essential for every team but it is hard to see the change in the game being reversed.
"The game has changed so much and moved on so much. Goalkeepers of yesteryear would never be mentioned when it comes to a possession-based football team but Ederson is a huge part of everything Pep does and I don't see anyone better than him with the ball at his feet. Kyle Walker is not the only one to admit that without Ederson in goal City may well have lost the final in Istanbul, and it was his hands more than his feet that will be remembered. To say he has revolutionised goalkeeping in the league, the old-fashioned characteristics still get the glory.
