Manchester City beat Newcastle United 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium to maintain their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season.
Eddie Howe has hailed 'elite' Manchester City after admitting Newcastle United struggled to impose their game plan on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola's side won 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium with Julian Alvarez's first-half strike enough to secure the victory. City's boss had called for supporters to help his team through the early fixture pile up and his post-match reaction showed they delivered. Newcastle tried to press City high up the pitch but Howe admitted that plan didn't work out. City were able to withstand the pressure and work their way up the pitch, fashioning chances on the Magpies' goal.
"It was a tough game, as we knew it would be," Howe told TNT Sports. "They are an elite team and we tried our best to execute our plan."We tried to press them high and make it difficult for them, but I thought they did well against that in the first half. We were much better in the second, but when those moments came we were not clinical enough.
"The second half showing was much better. There were moments for us because I thought fitness-wise we looked good, but technically we were off and that’s probably where we lost the game. I have to compliment our back four because they defended their transition well during the game and there were many of them."
