Ed Davey’s Blue Wall stunts are as subtle as a brick - but he’s worrying the Tories
But most toxic of all for the Tories has been the mortgage misery inflicted on thousands of homeowners in the South East. New House of Commons Library research shows that Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Sussex and other true blue areas have the highest numbers of households coming off fixed rate mortgages next month.
The feedback on the home counties campaign trail so far is certainly unnerving Tory MPs. Although some doors are no longer slammed in their faces, as they were under Boris Johnson, in many places lifelong Conservatives have a weary resignation that they are about to jump ship. What hasn’t helped Sunak is the perception that for all his talk about compassionate Conservatism, the anti-migrant rhetoric from Home Secretary Suella Braverman and the appointment of culture warrior Lee Anderson as deputy chairman is turning off the blue wall even as it tries to appeal to the “red wall” in the north.
Yet, overall, many Tories are more confident about facing Labour in these elections than they are the party they dub “the yellow peril”. In Stoke, Swindon, Derbyshire and Staffordshire, Labour knows it has a tough task to retake areas where there has been increasing Conservative support ever since 2010, not just in the Johnson landslide of 2019.
