An abrupt and persistent reduction in Atlantic salmon body sizes first observed in some Norwegian rivers in 2005 may signify a widespread shift in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean ecosystem, finds a new study in ScienceAdvances.

The body length of Atlantic salmon when they leave the rivers and enter the sea, which is the life stage called smolt, decreased in the middle and the northern regions but increased in the south-western region . In the northern region, a model with a negative trend was supported, while in the south-western region, a model with positive trend was supported. There was no support for a trend in the south-eastern region.
