East Side crime forum focuses on community, police efforts
Etoy McGarity, who lost her husband to gun violence in May 2020, asks why officials are not harder on crime in District 2.Neighborhood associations who keep an eye out for suspicious activity, nonprofits dedicated to keeping youths out of trouble and the targeted efforts of San Antonio police were all the focal points of a forum about combating crime on the East Side.
An audience of more than 100 people including District 2 residents, community organizers and representatives from city departments sat socially distanced with masks on Tuesday evening in the gym of the Second Baptist Church Community Center, 3310 E. Commerce St.McKee-Rodriguez said he hoped to address the stigma that the East Side is a crime-ridden area, displaying statics showing that crime has increased citywide by 12.8 percent, but that the increase was smaller on the east service area, at 6.
Deputy Police Chief Chris Benavides was another panelist who oversees uniformed officers and the department’s various community outreach programs. Benavides himself is often available at community meetings to find out the root causes of crime. He said that in any community, police do not know the problems unless they get calls for a particular crime or witness it.
“The reason why individuals commit crimes and continue to do so is because there are not enough programs that deal with the mental process,” Tutt said. “You’re putting the same individuals back in the community with the same thought process.”
