Houston has not made the playoffs since 2017. The team finished at the bottom of the MLS Western Conference standings in two of the last three years and last year finished just one point higher than the last-place team. “I think the Dynamo in general are the underdogs,” Dynamo defender Erik Sviatchenko said. “Whenever we are spoken about, it’s always the underdogs. And that’s due to the last seasons, of course, but I think this season has been much different, and we are in a position in the league where we have given ourselves a chance to compete and be in a final. Being the underdogs is fine for us. We have a game plan that we’re going to stick to, and we believe 100 percent that we can do it.
The Dynamo’s Open Cup journey this year had it all. They eked out a road win against lower-division side Tampa Bay Rowdies, beat Sporting Kansas City 1-0 at home while playing down a man, and pummeled Minnesota United 4-0 while playing up a man. In the quarterfinals, the Dynamo scored four goals in a road win over the Chicago Fire. In the semis, they claimed a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake.
Crafting the Dynamo’s identity hasn’t been an easy task. Only 11 of the 28 players on Houston's active roster were with the team last season, excluding two who are out on loan to other teams. Although the lack of continuity presents its own challenges, it also allowed Olsen, who was hired last November, to begin his Houston tenure with what he described as a “blank canvas.”
Even with so many new players, the Dynamo overcame inconsistent play early in the season and have managed to look remarkably cohesive. Prior to a 2-1 loss to Kansas City on Saturday, Houston was undefeated in seven consecutive league matches.
