Everton captain Seamus Coleman is 35 today but has other significant milestones on the horizon
Many happy returns to Seamus Coleman who celebrates his 35th birthday today. But while the Everton captain is now eligible to play veterans league football, he’ll be determined to show he’s still got plenty more miles on the clock when it comes to operating in world’s toughest domestic division.
Coleman’s predecessor in the side, home-grown hero Tony Hibbert, had been one of the old school in terms of being a steady performer but played 329 games for Everton without scoring – a club record for an outfield player. In contrast, the man from Killybegs in County Donegal has found the net on 28 occasions, including seven times in the 2013/14 campaign alone, Roberto Martinez’s first season in charge.
Rafael Benitez made a point of name-checking the Irishman in his first press conference as Blues boss, declaring: “He is an inspiration for everyone. He is a very good professional. He is very helpful for me. He can be a key player. I like him as a player and as a person.”
