The DWP has published its Annual Report and Accounts 2024
The Department for Work and Pensions has issued a warning that it is scrutinising Universal Credit claims to identify individuals cohabiting without informing the benefits agency, as part of its efforts to combat fraud.
The DWP stated: "The key loss areas in Universal Credit are overpayments caused by undeclared earnings , undeclared capital, undeclared partner , household composition and incorrect housing costs. There were decreases in most of the key loss areas in 2023-24"The DWP has outlined its definition of a couple living together. According to the DWP, it says: "The Department for Work and Pensions counts 2 people as being in a couple if they live in the same household and are:".
This distinction is important because some benefits are calculated based on household income rather than individual income, and certain benefits may not be paid at all if your partner is employed or already receiving a different benefit such as Tax Credit. In this way, couples who live together without declaring their partner may try to claim benefits they are not actually eligible for, which is fraud.
