After beating Texas A&M, D.J. Durkin joins Aggies as defensive coordinator

“Saying , ‘This is the scheme and learn this playbook,’ and then throwing it out there - sometimes that would work and sometimes it wouldn’t,” Durkin said of different ways to handle different situations. “But our job as coaches is to make sure we’re evaluating our players, and what they do best.Durkin, a former Maryland head coach, arrived at A&M in January from Mississippi, about two months after he’d schemed to defeat the Aggies 29-19 in Oxford, Miss.
Durkin and Elko both rely on a four-down front as their base defense, with the ability to adjust from week to week — or on the fly over four quarters. “This program and with Coach Fisher’s vision and his proven track record, everything lines up to really do something special,” said Durkin, referencing Fisher’s national title while at Florida State in 2013. “We’ve acquired great talent and great players, and, now in getting to know everyone, we have great people .
