Brandon Drury bruised but feeling fortunate; timetable for return not known
He was looking for a curveball and recognized the pitch out of Dustin May’s hand, so he stayed in waiting for the pitch to break. It did not and instead struck him in the face guard, which detached from his helmet as Drury hit the ground.
“It kind of shocks you at first,” Drury said Saturday, a day after the incident. “Right away when it happened, I didn’t really know where I was. The flap broke off and hit me in the face, so I thought that maybe the ball hit me in the face. I wasn’t really sure what was going on.” Drury had a bruise on his left cheek but said he was feeling “a little better” Saturday. He had not done any on-field activity and it wasn’t known when he will return to the Padres’ lineup.
Drury stayed in the game after being hit by the 83 mph pitch leading off the sixth inning and ended up scoring on Jurickson Profar’s three-run homer. The memory wasn’t all that clear.“I was kind of out of it for a little bit on the bases,” he said. “I was trying to get through the game, but I was pretty lightheaded.”
Wil Myers replaced Drury at first base Friday in the bottom of the sixth inning. Josh Bell is starting at first Saturday while Jurickson Profar serves as designated hitter and Myers played left field. Drury has mostly been playing first base but also alternating with Bell at DH.
