All electronic tolling system is being implemented in the eastern part of Pa. and will be functional in 2025.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said it has entered the final phase of implementing All-Electronic Tolling by installing an electronic cashless overhead system that drivers pass under at highway speed with no need to slow down and pass through a booth.
The commission started the electronic tolling project 13 years ago. The first four pilot projects were launched between 2016 and 2019. The remaining parts of the Turnpike converted to electronic tolling in 2020. Open Road Tolling is the final stage. Construction is underway on 19 gantries with small utility buildings “east of the Reading interchange to the New Jersey line and along the entire Northeastern Extension .
The Turnpike Commission is legislatively mandated to pay the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation $7.9 billion over the past 15 years. The commission’s obligation in 2022 decreased to $50 million per year, down from $450 million but the commission said it “will be paying down the debt to finance the Act 44 mandate for years to come.
