GMB's Dr Hilary details heartbreaking moment he lost pal to prostate cancer: 'It was too late' GMB
Dr Hilary Jones has spoken out on the devastating time he lost his friend to prostate cancer after being diagnosed "too late".
"But his father had died of prostate cancer and he'd never told his son what his underlying cancer was, presumably, because he was too embarrassed to say it was his prostate gland," he continued. "And he was my friend who developed the same symptoms."Dr Hilary explained that while this took place 20 years ago, it's still fresh in his mind. They would go down to play squash once a week together and he joked about how his pal was a "better player than me".
"You just feel just, maybe his dad told him that he he had had prostate cancer at a young age, then my friend would have been informed and would have been having regular screening in advance of his obvious symptoms." "That's a message that we need to get out to lots of men that, you know, test regularly, don't be embarrassed and be fearful that the treatments are not as bad as men imagined and could save your life," he told OK!
He shared: "The warning signs are very similar to a benign enlargement of the prostate, which happens as men get older anyway. But one in 10 will will have prostate cancer and the symptoms are very similar. So it's a feeling that you need to go more often a weaker stream of urine, a feeling of urgency, when you've got to go you've got to go.
