Wisconsin players are throwing up prayers and having them answered, Johnny Davis leaning into Eric Hunter for a 22-footer off the glass with 25 seconds remaining and then Chucky Hepburn leaping away from Jaden Ivey for a 3-pointer off the glass for the game-winner with 1.5 seconds left. These are some seriously lucky shots — “that was some bull ” Davis was saying afterward — but they count andfor the Boilermakers’ fourth last-second defeat of the season.
But not like this. Not with the deepest, most balanced team in college basketball becoming top-heavy. We’ve waited all season to see what weakness, if any, this loaded Purdue team has.Jaden Ivey and Zach Edey are Purdue’s best two players, but they are not Purdue’s only two competent players. Watch the last 13 minutes of this loss to Wisconsin ,Ivey and Edey scored Purdue’s final 28 points Tuesday. After Eric Hunter’s free throw with 13:01 left, nobody else from Purdue scored.
But they are not perfect, and they were not perfect Tuesday, and if Purdue needs its best two players, after carrying a heavy load since November, to play perfectly to win these intense games against intense competition in March, well, you’ve already seen the result. Painter and Ivey were stressing the luck of those shots going in off the glass — “I’m almost speechless,” Ivey was saying, “and don’t know what else to say” — there’s more to this game than good fortune. Wisconsin was lucky, yes, but Purdue wasn’t good enough. This was Purdue’s sixth loss of the season, as you know. Four have come on 3-pointers in the final seconds.
Purdue needs to find Isaiah Thompson, a 43.2% shooter on 3-pointers who scored 18 points on Jan. 27 against Iowa and has scored 17 points, total, in the 10 games since. Purdue definitely needs to find its chemistry. Williams was gesturing at Gillis and snapping at Eric Hunter after that errant pass described earlier. Matt Painter was talking angrily about somebody on his team, perhaps several somebodies, when he was asked about Zach Edey’s amazing improvement.
