'While visibility is important, it is not enough.' Writer Sinéad Burke explains how fashion misses the point when representing body diversity

Looking back on my relationship with my body—and perhaps more importantly, the world’s perception of it—it makes sense that I gravitated towards the fashion industry. Even in my teenage years, I knew that clothes could be used as a vehicle to create change. I vividly remember wearing a silver metallic jacket from Uniqlo with neon orange lining and fixtures to a music festival.
It was also disappointing that such efforts were needed for people to see me the way I wanted to be seen. I didn’t choose to be a little person, to have dwarfism, or to live in this body, but I am grateful for who it has allowed me to become. It has shaped my personality, my interests, and my values. But my existence also unintentionally invites a response from others—surprise, humor, and even mockery.
Think for just a minute about the viral moments that depict disability: a video of a deaf child wearing hearing aids for the first time; a commercial with an overdub declaring that disabled people are more than our disability. Typically written by non-disabled people for a non-disabled audience, the aim of these stories is to lessen society’s discomfort with disability, to normalize our otherness. There are exceptions, of course.
