ANAHEIM — Shohei Ohtani lost a pitchers’ duel in … a bullpen game?
The Angels wasted one of Ohtani’s best pitching performances of the season. He gave up just Freddie Freeman’s solo homer in seven innings, striking out 12. Luis Rengifo led off the third with a double and went to third on a groundout. Mickey Moniak then hit a fly ball to shallow left field. David Peralta made the play and uncorked a strong one-hop throw to the plate, nailing Rengifo to end the inning.
Caleb Ferguson took over and worked a scoreless eighth. By the time Evan Phillips got the ball in the ninth, he had an insurance run on Miguel Vargas’ homer in the top of the ninth. Vargas snapped an 0-for-24 slump with the homer.Ohtani threw 101 pitches, 77 strikes, which was his highest strike percentage of the season.
