By Pooja Toshniwal PahariaApr 10 2023Reviewed by Lily Ramsey, LLM In a recent study published in eClinicalMedicine, researchers investigated whether walnut consumption can improve adolescents' neuropsychological and behavioral development.
Walnuts are rich dietary sources of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid , the precursor fatty acid for longer-chain eicosapentaenoic acid docosahexaenoic acid. In total, 771 healthy 11 to 16-year-olds were randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to receive 30.0 grams daily of raw Californian walnut kernels for dietary consumption over six months, to meet recommended dietary allowance was 2.50 grams of omega-3 fatty acids daily or no walnuts .
All individuals completed food frequency questionnaires . Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed using the KIDMED Index. The Attention Network Test was used to assess attention, and the N-back task was used to assess working memory. Individuals aged >16.0 years, regularly consuming omega-3 fatty acid supplements and/or walnuts, and individuals with self-documented walnut or gluten allergies were excluded from the analysis.
