But sometimes boycotts can work. The most powerful endorsement of them comes from the anti-apartheid movement. For more than three decades, white-ruled South Africa was a sporting pariah. It was banned from all Olympics between 1964 and 1992 . And its participation in other sports such as rugby union and cricket was severely restricted. Many political scientists believe this sporting isolation contributed to the regime’s downfall.
