Garcia: District 118 House race could be tilted by debate on guns and abortion

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, left, signs a giant copy of his Parental Bill of Rights as Rep. John Lujan holds it for him at the PicaPica Plaza Event Center on the Southside of San Antonio on Monday, May 9, 2022. Several hundred Republican faithful attended the event.John Lujan’s relationship with the Texas Legislature is kind of like Bill Belichick’s history with the New York Jets.

Earlier this year, political prognosticators also expected November to deliver a GOP wave election, a backlash against Biden’s presidency and the high inflation that has accompanied it. The Dobbs decision triggered the enactment of a Republican-driven state law which prohibits abortion even in cases of rape and incest.

“Republicans are not doing enough to protect our kids,” Farias said of the GOP’s intransigence on gun reform. Lujan is as affable a figure as you’ll find in politics and it’s to his credit that he has little appetite for partisan mud-slinging. But his unwillingness to take a stand on hot-button issues can be maddening.
