Dramatic scenes in Leyland today
Residents and passers-by watched in shock as a huge police presence swarmed a normally quiet residential area of Leyland.
Broadfield Drive was considerably busier than normal as motorists slowed down to get a closer look at the dramatic scenes which led to several properties being evacuated and a police cordon being put in place. Six hours into the operation Superintendent Gary Crowe arrived at the scene and revealed the search was likely to continue for "at least the rest of the day".
Earlier in the day Lancashire Constabulary issued a statement in which they said: "You may have noticed a police presence in the area close to Broadfield Drive in Leyland so we wanted to let you know what is going on. A 59-year-old man from Leyland was arrested at the scene under the Explosives Act, and he remains in custody. Emergency services remain at the scene and a number of properties have been evacuated."
