Dirk Nowitzki, right, celebrates his career with Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. By Des Bieler Des Bieler Sports reporter covering national topics, including fantasy football, as well as supporting coverage of D.C.-area teams Email Bio Follow April 10 at 1:01 AM The Mavericks were already treating Tuesday’s home date with the Suns very much as if it were going to be Dirk Nowitzki’s final game in Dallas, and following the win over Phoenix, he confirmed that he was indeed retiring from the NBA.
Drafted straight out of Germany in 1998 as the ninth overall pick, then immediately traded from the Bucks to the Mavs for Robert “Tractor” Traylor, Nowitzki went on to etch his name in the NBA record books as the league’s greatest European player. His 31,540 points are sixth all-time, as are his 7,238 free throws, and he ranks third in games and minutes played, behind only Robert Parish and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
“I promise you that you have a job for life, I don’t care what you do,” Cuban continued, to roars from fans. He also promised to retire Nowitzki’s number and put “the biggest, most bad-ass statue ever” outside the arena.Charles Barkley was in attendance and also paid tribute to Nowitzki, calling him “the nicest man ever.” Barkley added, “It’s been an honor and a privilege to watch you — enjoy the rest of your life.”Thank you, @swish41 - it was a great ride. 🐐#MFFL | @dallasmavs pic.
