The drought-tolerant trees are part of the franchise agreement the city signed in 2021 with SDG&E
The first of 290 drought-tolerant trees were planted Friday in the southeastern San Diego neighborhood of Bay Terraces — part of a 10-year partnership between the city and San Diego Gas & Electric that will see 2,500 trees planted in the next 10 years in areas across the city.Bay Terraces Communities Association
The extension the city signed with SDG&E came after months of negotiations and charges by some critics that city officials were not driving a hard enough bargain. SDG&E pays for the trees and their planting while the city will maintain them. The cost of each tree comes from SDG&E shareholder dollars, not ratepayers.
And adding shade to a street, Webb said, helps reduce ambient temperatures which can conserve energy.
