Leicester City have brought in Dean Smith until the end of this season, but can he provide a new manager bounce, or have they left this decision too late? twoht

With eight games to go of their season, Leicester City are in serious trouble. One place off the bottom of the Premier League and with just a single point having been taken from their last eight games, their slide has been masked by the tightness across the entire bottom half of the division.

And games come thick and fast at this time of the year. It only took Leicester nine days to announce thatfor the rest of this season, but in that time they managed to pack in successive home defeats against Aston Villa and Bournemouth, providing even less time to turn things around. So it is that Smith, along with Craig Shakespeare, arrives at the club with a very clear target for the rest of this season: Please, for the love of God, find a way of somehow keeping us in the Premier League.

Last summer arrived with the club in a tetchy frame of mind, with spending on new players cut and the biggest concern being whether they’d be able to keep hold of the sought-after Wesley Fofana, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison rather than the extent to which they would be able to further strengthen. By the time they’d played seven games this time around they were rooted to the bottom of the table, having conceded four goals to Brighton, five to Arsenal and six to Spurs.

King Power International’s turnover falling from £2.3bn in 2019 to £448m in 2021. There doesn’t seem to be any doubting their ongoing commitment – chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha converted £164m of club debt into equity at the end of January to provide a little more financial stability – but the company accounts for the 2021/22 season had shown the depth of the issue: a record loss of £92.5m.
