David Hicks first arrived at Paetow High Schoo“He started warm-ups, he ran the warm-ups, he ran strength and conditioning,” said Hicks, who started as an associate head coach at Paetow last season and was later promoted to head coach.Hicks is referring to Alexander Kilgore, a standout senior linebacker at Paetow this past season whom Hicks said “epitomized what it means to be a high school football player.” Kilgore played linebacker, running back and special teams for Paetow.
All three of SMU’s leading tacklers and starting linebackers from last season graduated. The Mustangs do return some experience in linebackers JaQwondis Burns, Kamryn Farrar and Keke Burns. They also added Ahmad Walker, a two-year starter at Liberty, via the transfer portal. “He’s in a situation to get reps this spring,” Symons said, “which is huge to see his growth and development there.”In the lead-up to both signing windows this season, Symons said he was nervous. He really liked the class of committed players SMU had, but he knew there was competition before those commitments officially signed.Hicks essentially said pick a conference, including the Southeastern Conference, and there were schools in it that wanted Kilgore.
