Detroit automakers are in a standoff with the United Auto Workers union, with the two sides seemingly far from reaching a new contract agreement.
The Detroit Auto Show has kicked off with glitzy new vehicles overshadowed by a potential auto workers' strike that becomes more likely with each passing hour.
"People are a little bit nervous about that and we'll hear the results tomorrow as we approach midnight." Ford chief executive Jim Farley said on Tuesday night that the two sides had made progress, but had"more to do." These include the UAW's announcement of a Friday afternoon rally in downtown Detroit with Fain and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, one of Congress' staunchest champions of organized labor. The economic impact of a strike would depend on its scope and length.
Ford kicked off this year's proceedings with a Tuesday night celebration of its updated F-150 pickup truck, for decades the most popular vehicle in the United States. President Joe Biden weighed in last month, saying the UAW"deserves a contract that sustains the middle class," but urging"all sides to work together to forge a fair agreement."Fain has been dismissive of such company proposals, calling the offers"insulting."
