The detective was forced to provide a credit card to renew the service, delaying search efforts by a half-hour. Fortunately, the boy was recovered in the span of those 30 minutes, when a witness in Waukegan, Illinois spotted the driver of one of the two vehicles abandoning “a small child” in a parking lot.Article content
Volkswagen’s failure to assist in a critical active investigation when the life of a toddler was on the line raises questions about its GPS service and other Car-Net systems that are held behind subscription paywalls. The brand addressed the concerns in a statement to the media. “Volkswagen has a procedure in place with a third-party provider for Car-Net Support Services involving emergency requests from law enforcement. They have executed this process successfully in previous incidents. Unfortunately, in this instance, there was a serious breach of the process. We are addressing the situation with the parties involved,” Volkswagen said in a statement to the media.
The boy was unharmed and the VW SUV has been found, but the woman remains in hospital with serious injuries while police hunt for the BMW and suspects.
