‘Desperate need’: San Antonio doctors use COVID-positive donor organs for kidney, liver transplants

Now, many centers are using these organs. A Methodist Healthcare spokesperson said its transplant institute is currently taking offers for deceased donor kidneys among those who tested positive for the coronavirus on a case-by-case basis by transplant physicians.University Health performed its first organ transplant from a donor who tested positive for COVID-19 in October.
Houston resident Lonnie Dunlap was fortunate that by the time he made the national organ waiting list last fall, many U.S. transplant centers had already developed their own protocols to mitigate the risks. He wasn’t fazed when doctors told him the donor tested positive for COVID-19 during the screening process.Dunlap became the Houston hospital’s first transplant patient to receive an organ from a COVID-positive donor.
