Since the state program’s inception in 1988, approximately $1.6 billion has been invested into preservation easements, according to the agriculture department.

The Pennsylvania Land Preservation Board has approved another round of farm preservation deals worth nearly $7.5 million, including several properties in the south-central region, the Pa. Department of Agriculture announced Thursday.

The state, in conjunction with county and local governments and nonprofits, funds the easement purchases. Farmers typically use the easement sale proceeds to re-invest in their farms, according to the state, and may also agree to additional conservation measures as a condition of the deal. Since the program’s inception in 1988, approximately $1.6 billion has been invested into preservation easements in Pennsylvania, according to the agriculture department.
