“You’re in the middle of it all, trying to try to help people build back, and so it was daunting to come in at that point,” he said.

An Alice native who lettered in three sports at Carrizo Springs High, he got interested in politics as a student at San Antonio’s St. Mary University.
Former Texas House Speaker Joe Straus’ late mother, Joci Straus, helped Saenz secure a job offer from the State Department in Washington under former President George H.W. Bush. The gig was short-lived. By the end of 2000, Saenz latched onto a more enduring employer — Perry, who was just leaving as lieutenant governor to succeed President-elect George W. Bush as governor. He served Perry as spokesman, appointments office staff member, 2002 campaign operative, senior adviser, assistant secretary of state over border commerce and manager of Perry’s 2006 reelection bid.
