The public health department also estimated 90% of Coloradans are immune to the omicron variant through vaccination or infection, and there is a low incidence of severe disease from COVID-19 for people who are vaccinated and boosted, and for children under 5.
Although the vaccine mandate has been lifted, the department still said staying up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters is the “best way to protect against severe disease,” stating data from the omicron surge in Denver showed people who are boosted are 86% less likely to die and 51% less likely to be hospitalized compared to someone who has gotten a COVID-19 vaccination but not a booster.
Federal and state vaccination mandates are still in effect for personnel in certain settings, the department said in the statement, such as medical facilities. The state still requires the COVID-19 vaccine for health care workers who interact with patients, and state employees must either be fully vaccinated or participate in twice-weekly testing, according to the
