There's more to this fabric than just a bog standard pair of jeans

Aside from some infamous red carpet occasions that Justin Timberlake would rather we forget, denim has historically been viewed as a casual fabric. And yet we've been noticing more and more of it at awards shows over the past year or so, black tie rulebook be damned. Australian actor Kodi-Smit McPhee sported a pair of what seemed like normal light-wash jeans for the 2022 Met Gala, yet normal they were not.

“Tremaine Emory’s story telling ethos, it’s a powerful one,” says stylist Zahra Asmail, explaining how she arrived on the look with Carner. “[The collection] pays tribute to Black artists, creatives and musicians who were celebrated in Europe in the '50s, even as segregation raged in the US. These individuals paved the way for creatives today; it only seemed fitting.” Layered over the brand’s monogram oblique is a wreath-style peace sign print, styled over a striped knit in Rasta colours.

Thankfully, the old production methods are being replaced with innovative, eco-conscious technology. PANGAIA rose to dominance when lockdown redirected people’s expendable income towards loungewear; the “materials science company” creates timeless designs with fabrics of their own planet-friendly formulation. Their latest collaboration with Evrnu is marked with the, the first denim product to be make entirely with NuCycl – a fibre created from pre- and post-consumer textile waste.

While materials like this are essential, the best option to reduce denim’s environmental impact is always using the resources that are already available. The last few years have seen brands pop up catering to that philosophy, producing contemporary designs with discarded deadstock. E.L.V.
