WASHINGTON – House Democrats are pushing to gain access to President Donald Trump's finances and asked a tax firm for documents stemming back 10 years.
"As we understand the focus of the Chairman's request, he is seeking information and material about President Trump's personal finances going back ten years in time — well before the president was even a candidate for federal office," the two Republicans write."His inquiry does not appear to have a valid legislative purpose and instead seems to seek information to embarrass a private individual.
Cummings' request was made last week before special counsel Robert Mueller completed his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The results, which were summarized by Attorney General William Barr in a four-page letter, found that the Trump campaign did not conspire with Russia during the election. Separately, Barr also wrote in the letter to Congress on Sunday that evidence collected was not sufficient to prove Trump committed a crime by obstructing the probe.
"They complain about everything I do," Cummings said."They complain about every single thing I do. And that should be expected. But we’re just seeking the truth that’s all." In his request, Cummings asked Mazars' CEO Victor Wahba for all financial documents relating to Trump's wealth that was in the firm's possession, any audits done, all communications with Trump and those representing him, along with internal communications related to any concerns over Trump's finances.
Earlier this month, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin suggested he would protect Trump’s privacy if he receives a request from House Democrats for Trump’s tax returns.
