💬 Dementia care still falls to the women in most families – and ours is no different
Any mother soon learns that it will be she, and not her male partner, who receives the calls from nursery or school to deliver the news that little Jim or Jemima has thrown up or fallen off the climbing frame and needs to be collected immediately. During lockdowns it was generally Mum juggling work Zoom calls, I had work meetings cancelled by women , who were the ones who had to or chose to work from home when schools were closed. Dad? Well, it seemed Dad just carried on as normal.
When Mum was diagnosed with dementia in 2021, my older sister Vanna, who lives in the same town as her , immediately bore the lion’s share of the day-to-day care. Mum was living alone, having lost our stepfather in 2019. Truth be told, my sister and I felt uncomfortable asking my brother to play a significant role, particularly when it would potentially involve Mum’s personal care, such as dressing, taking her to the loo and helping her shower.
