The violent and lawless erasure of the Amazon is perhaps the world’s greatest environmental crime story. In Brazil, home to about 60 percent of the Amazon, nearly one-fifth has already been destroyed. And virtually no one has been held accountable.

It would almost certainly be years before the matter was settled. If it ever was.

The screen showed the states of Acre and neighboring Rondônia, side by side, each showing a different side of the debate over the future of the Amazon. Two of the last Brazilian states to be incorporated, they once mirrored one another: remote, forested jurisdictions of similar size and economic power.
