Defending champion Valor Christian meets underdog Arapahoe in Class 5A girls Final Four, the first meeting between bonded programs: by KyleNewmanDP copreps
Defending champion and top-seeded Valor Christian is the favorite against No. 5 Arapahoe, which seeks it first title game appearance in program history. But 12th-year coach Jerry Knafelc is confident the Warriors will be able to challenge the Eagles’ pillars of Beers, senior guard Macey Huard and senior point guard Mariah Hilliard.
“We’ve got to deal with Reagan, who is so strong and so skilled, and a lot of their other players are equally skilled,” Knafelc said. “We’ve got to pick our poison a little bit in terms of how we mitigate the inside game with Reagan, without getting into foul trouble. Knafelc, who also led the Warriors to the Final Four in 2013, is coaching with his son Jed, who is the lead varsity assistant. The older Knafelc said he has a “great dynamic” with his son, a 2009 Arapahoe graduate who played and then coached at CSU-Pueblo.
