Dominic Kelley runs for 110 yards and two touchdowns as the Spartans get back to .500
CONCORD – De La Salle’s 24-10 triumph over St. Mary’s-Stockton was, in many ways, a return to form.
The result? 279 rushing yards on 39 attempts for De La Salle against a worn-down and demoralized St. Mary’s defense, and some measure of revenge for last year’s 45-35 loss in Stockton. “The alley was wide open … no one was there,” Kelley said after his two touchdown day. ”They gave up on that play, so I just walked in.”.
Senior return man Johnathan Guerrero rewarded his coaches’ trust in him and returned the kick from deep in the end zone to the St. Mary’s 20-yard line. Four Kelley runs later behind mauling linemen such as Ace Robinson and Jackson Barth , De La Salle held a 7-3 lead with forty seconds left in the quarter.
Following another St. Mary’s punt, De La Salle proceeded to run the ball on 13 consecutive plays before the drive fizzled out with two incomplete passes. St. Mary’s stellar QB Samson Hunkin, who threw for 167 yards and rushed for 80 more, couldn’t’ get the offense its own red zone though.
