Multilingual signs welcoming visitors to beaches in Greater Boston should be installed by next summer, said Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Brian Arrigo. A robust rollout of signs in multiple languages was promised to promote diversity and inclusion at the public spaces.
Multilingual signs welcoming visitors to beaches in Greater Boston should be installed by next summer, two seasons later than was expected. A robust rollout of signs in multiple languages was promised to promote diversity and inclusion at the public spaces.
The pledge comes after former Acting DCR Commissioner Stephanie Cooper signaled the multilingual campaign would be rolled out in 2022, said Chris Mancini, executive director of the nonprofit Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, which manages the Metropolitan Beaches Commission. DCR has yet to complete its signage effort, Mancini told the State House News Service.
Only 4 out of 250 signs surveyed by Save the Harbor/Save the Bay in winter 2022 had languages other than English, according to the report. "In the past when administrations change, sometimes things slip. Commissioner Arrigo made it very clear today that he is not going to let this slip — and that's important," Berman said. He added,"We're counting on him to hold the agency accountable."
