Dauphin County commissioners saw the potential in redeveloped former Harrisburg State Hospital grounds to create jobs and spur economic development but the state decided to go in a different direction.
With their hope of seeing 300 acres back on the property tax rolls seemingly dashed, Dauphin County officials are frustrated with the state’s plans to hold on to the former Harrisburg State Hospital property.
A study will be performed next year to identify how the rest of the grounds – referred to by state officials as the “DGS annex” – could be used to serve current and future state government needs. In the meantime, preparations have begun on work to separate the utility network that interconnects all the buildings located on the property.
Attempts to reach an extension of the agreement for the proposed deal failed despite numerous tries to keep it alive given how commissioners saw it as “critical to creating economic opportunity and community renewal” not only in the county but the region and state, county officials said. A spokeswoman for the the governor had no further comment beyond what the general services spokesman said.
