Danica Patrick might have just found her 2nd career
Mike Tirico and Danica Patrick broadcast for NBC prior to the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 26, 2019.NBC’s first Indianapolis 500 on Sunday outdrew Fox’s revival of NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600, but both saw increases in viewership -- a positive sign for auto racing, a sport that had been spinning its wheels on TV.
That is one reason for NBC to celebrate, with a sensational race that delivered viewership numbers better than expected. But there was another highlight: Its Indy 500 broadcast team was solid, and the former drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Danica Patrick clicked. Placed with NBC emcee Mike Tirico in a pit-lane booth, Patrick and Earnhardt fed off each other as if they’d done this before, with Earnhardt hitting the human-interest angles that developed during the race, and Patrick supplying smooth and succinct race analysis.
Earnhardt, 43, and Patrick, 37, encountered so much exposure as drivers that both became well-spoken, but neither yammered on Sunday. The broadcast team also included play-by-play man Leigh Diffey and analysts Paul Tracy and Townsend Bell, but Danica and Junior stood out.
