A wind chill warning remains in effect until this afternoon for the Central Beaufort Sea CoastANCHORAGE, Alaska - Although Southcentral and Southeast Alaska are dealing with warmer weather, parts of the state continue to see dangerous wind chill readings.
Deadhorse has already seen wind chills this morning drop as low as -70 below. In conditions this cold, any exposed skin can see frostbite occur within five minutes. It’s very important to make sure that the necessary precautions are taken to keep safe for those who are going to be outside for extended periods of time.
Elsewhere across the state, the remaining wind chill advisories/warnings will expire either this afternoon or into the evening hours. While bitterly cold wind chills continue out west, some warmer weather has returned to the region. Thursday brings the return to single-digit highs after spending much of the week seeing air temperatures well below zero. While much of the state continues to see warmer weather, colder conditions will linger along the North Slope through early next week.
While colder weather continues to the north, temperatures continue to warm well above average for both Southcentral and Southeast. Highs in Southcentral Alaska will break freezing again later today, while Southeast warms well into the 40s. As Southcentral stays on the drier side today, some light snow can be expected for eastern Prince William Sound. Both Valdez and Cordova could see snowfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches of accumulation.
Meanwhile, Southeast continues to see active weather. A winter storm warning remains in effect for the Klondike and Haines Highway, where up to 8 inches of accumulation looks possible. Winds up to 55 mph will also be expected for the first part of the day. While the warning expires at 7 a.m., expect to see some light snow showers linger through mid-morning.
