I am going slightly back into the deep mists of time here, but I think on our first official Valentine’s Day I sent Sarah five separate letters. Each one was posted on a different day and each one contained a photocopy of a part of my hand with some words on it. Once she had them all, they made a full hand with a poem written across my palm. I can’t remember what I had written, but I was studying history at university, so I’d like to think it was deep and meaningful.
Mrs Walker and I have never set a budget but we did go down the exercise route one year. I got Sarah a tennis racket and she got me a punch bag. At the time we lived in a tiny two-up-two-down home in Liverpool and I spent hours attaching the bracket for the bag onto the wall in the corner of our bedroom. I was very proud of myself and celebrated by giving it a few whacks with the gloves which came with it.
“I know we don’t take it really seriously,” said Mrs Walker the next morning, “But can we never go down the kitchen route again please?”. I offered no excuses. It was a poor choice. Channel 5 commissioned a special programme and I spent much of the week talking to friends and family about whether Paul would be comfortable and happy to talk about Nicky, their children and the continuing search for the truth.
